LG Voyager VX-10000?

I'm really wanting to get a new phone. My current Moto E815 has been a great phone, but after 3 years it's time for it to go. It's got lots of scratches now and really getting worn out. Yes, I do want the iPhone, but coverage just sucks here in the triangle area. What good is a phone if I have to worry about dropped calls all of the time? Verizon service is very solid and reliable here (always has). If AT&T did have good service here I would have already had the iPhone. :(

The LG Voyager VX-10000 was listed by CNET as one of the best Verizon phones. Phonescoop has had some really great reviews as well. My biggest concern is BREW and no real Java. I want to use web applications like Google Mail and Google Maps. I don't know how well these applications work on this phone. I have not looked, but I should be able to get a really good discount through UNC-CH plus an additional $100 off for finishing my contract a year ago.

Anyone own this phone? How is the web with it? I'm looking forward to a full QWERTY keyboard too and I've heard no complaints so far.

I have looked at those in the past, but not sure I want that. I know one of its biggest features is email, but not sure I want to be wedded to that feature. All of my personal email is in Gmail and that's where I want it to stay. Is the web browser and other features worth it?

the web browser is poo unless you like the mobile version of Opera, which I don't. Gmail does have a BB client, or you can configure it to access Gmail with POP or IMAP.

I strongly disagree that the web browser is poo. Admittedly, my personal web browsing requirements are pretty low-tech, but the BB browser is good, and I have mini-Opera (or whatever it's called) for the 1% of the time it isn't good enough.

But you are correct, Google has many BlackBerry tools, including GMail.

What is it you don't like about the browser? On phonescoop the opinions on the browser varied a great deal from horrible to amazing. It's really hard to tell what they are comparing it to.

I think it depends on what you want it to do :) Basically when you surf to a website, Blackberry's servers re-interpret the page to send to your browser, making it a little easier to read. It is... functional. For most basic needs.... a quick google search, stuff like that. It's just not pretty.

I've had decent luck with the Iphone on coverage. There is some spotty coverage right near Leesville for AT&T but while working in Durham and tooling around town here in Raleigh it has been great. The reception is supposed to be better with the 3G version since the back is now plastic instead of aluminum as well. If you can hold out I'm sure there will be quite a few local LJ'ers that could give you a review of the new 3G Iphone and reception once it comes out.

Yep, I can wait a bit longer, but I've been telling myself that for a year now. :p

I talk to [info]davegrrr quite a bit on the phone and he gets dropped all of the time while traveling in the triangle area. That's just incredibly aggravating. I know that everyone will have different results, but being able to make and remain on a call is just critical for me. Maybe I'm spoiled, but Verizon delivers in this area.

Also, is there 3G coverage in the area right now?

3G is decent for us actually.

I'm not surprised about Dave having issues with coverage in his area. It's a corridor from 540 to Lynn Rd and Leesville that is awful for AT&T. Hopefully they will fix it sooner or later.
I tell people all the time that since I've had the Iphone it is the first time I haven't been looking at the next best thing in phones (until they announced the 3G with GPS). My issue is battery life kinda sucks if you're a heavy browsing, youtube user and the EDGE speed kinda sucks at times. Biggest reason I'll upgrade. Other then that they would have to pry it out of my cold dead hands.

I have had more dropped calls and crap from AT&T than I ever did with Verizon. I will probably switch back when I'm finished with my contract.

I'd never recommend it to anyone. Overall, I'm pretty underwhelmed with the iPhone. Maybe with the update and the launch of the App Store. We'll see.

Every LG phone i've had lasts about 6 to 8 months and dies.. I am extremly tough on cell phones and they just don't seem to hold up well...

Samsung is who i prefer and have the best luck with
