LJ downtime still unexplained

I, too, was greatly disappointed to hear that a power failure wiped out Six Apart (who also hosts LJ) yesterday. Been reading some other comments and news this morning and it appears the power event in San Francisco was very unusual. There were many data centers there that have redundant power, but yesterday's event crippled those systems as well. I'm not sure of the extent, but it looks like it was multiple data centers. There were reports of the power going on and off over and over again all afternoon. Root cause was an underground electrical explosion that affected the grid.

Hopefully more news will be out soon on what happened and also hoping Six Apart works out their problems and co-location issues. These are key infrastructures I figured they already had in place.

Update: Found this news article regarding the power failure and impact.

And another update: This is direct from 365 Main hosting company that goes into detail what happened.

So, it looks like the infrastructure was there, but it failed through no fault of Six Apart. Apparently they are still still running the entire facility on diesel generators (and they have a 4 day fuel supply).

SFGate will probably have the best coverage... Some of the comments are hilarious, too.

I found this update from 365 Main...

In short, it appears several generators failed to come online and they exhausted their UPS (guess on my part).
