LJ power failure explained

I just read the updated document from 365 Main covering why the power failed a week ago. It's pretty bad how things went. In short, they have ten 2MW generators that operate as N+2 (they can take 2 generator failures and remain online). Their UPS system appears to be a flywheel based system, so that does not last long.

They lost not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 generators almost simultaneously. They test them weekly for many years and have been through dozens of other power failures. On this day they freaked out. They go into all of the ugly details on what happened on the analysis of how they tracked down the multiple problems. Good insight into what a major colo facility goes through.

I know I had a bad day, but if I was working for these people managing this mess when it unfolded, they get the all time This Day Really Sucks award over me.

I guess they should get some power hints from some telecom guys. Yeah, that room full of batteries may be a pain, but you'll forget it when it saves your ass.
