Just saw this story on the news this evening. There are little details other than the person worked on the ramp at RDU while handling bags on an aircraft. Guess there will be more details tomorrow.

This hits home with me since I used to work at RDU airport for American Eagle for a few years. I was one of those ramp rats who handled bags, directed aircraft, de-iced a few times during the winter and hooked up portable generators (aka GPU's--ground power units) to aircraft. It was hard work, but I liked it. It was physical, you had to think, got to ride on tractors, you were outdoors (not always a plus), talk on the radio, sometimes work at night, etc. All for $5/hr (this was in the late 80's).

It was a cool job, but it did have its dangers. Disconnecting GPU's from aircraft with a spinning prop three feet away, heavy bags, people on other tractors not paying attention, aircraft with running engines all over the place..., the list goes on.

I'll be interested to know what happened. Doubt it was anyone I know as it's been almost 20 years since I worked there.
