Hurricane Felix, now category 5

This was amazing to see on the news the growth of this storm. Just last night they were only predicting it would get up to category 3 as it made landfall in a few days. Now it's up to category 5 with sustained winds of 165mph with gusts to 200mph. NHC reports the pressure is still dropping and they expect more strengthening tonight. This is going to be one ass kicking storm.

There's another potential tropical system right on Felix's tail too.

This stuff fascinates me - in my next life, I'll be some kind of meteorologist/geologist/earth sciences/ecologist type.

Glad it's not just me wondering where this Category 5 storm came from. And it's looking like Costa Rica won't get hit too hard, but I'm still thinking of the damage that Mitch caused in Central America a few years back.

I did not know that.., interesting. Hard to find folks who are weather nuts. :) If it wasn't for computers, it's likely I would have been a meteorologist too.

Back when I lived with mmmmtino for so many years, we watched ungodly amounts of The Weather Channel. Then when he met his partner, the partner was a reporter, & covered hurricanes with some of the big shots from TWC. It was both funny & disappointing to learn that some of them were prissy & hated getting their hair mussed up in the storm.

Hee! You do know that my next major career goal is to do some sort of large-scale computer modeling, right? Weather prediction model stuff just fascinates me.

Also, to feed your weather addiction: Current hurricane computer models. You can see (from the archives) that there was a huge jump in all the predictions over just a few hours: most are cat 2/3 at 9/2 1200 UTC, most are cat 4 at 9/2 1800 UTC, and the storm was a cat 5 by 9/3 0000 UTC.

Argh! That site does referrer checking, so the individual links are coming up 403. Darnit.

You gotta check the NHC's forecast discussion and max wind probability chart... they showed cat 4-5 even if the public advisory didn't mention it.
