Multimedia geekness and goodness

I was thinking about it for a long time and I finally got one--Apple TV. I picked up a refurbished 40GB version for $229 direct from Apple. I was impressed that is was packaged in shrink wrap just like a new unit. I even had 100Mbps connection behind the TV, so no wireless setup and the bandwidth will be better. Entered the passcode to pair it with my iTunes upstairs and it was happy. One thing I did not expect was the link to YouTube! They created a direct and simple interface to play videos from them including search functions.

So, now it's time to get back on BitTorrent and begin downloading programs that I have missed. One particular show is Fifth Gear that I really love from the UK and it's not available here in the US on any network. I'm not into downloading movies and stuff. Just TV shows is all that I'm looking for. I used to use Azureus on the PC and it worked great. Although I have a new iMac since then and davegrrr suggested using Transmission. I read the reviews and it looked OK. It became dead weight on my system. I was constantly plagued with the spinning beachball (spinning hourglass for you Windows users) and after 2 days Transmission and the trackers refused to talk to each other (yes, port forwarding was setup manually and was OK). So, I installed Azuerus on the Mac, reloaded the existing torrents that were having so much grief and immediately data was flying in at 200KB/sec. The forums for Transmission show there are still quite a few problems apparently. It either works beautifully, or its useless and no one is really sure why.

Now, to get the AVI's into iTunes? Once, again, davegrrr to the rescue with suggesting VisualHub! It's shareware, costs $23, only works on Mac OSX, but this is one slick piece of software. The interface is clean and simple, but very powerful. Just a few clicks and it's off and running. AVI's encoded with XviD come our perfectly thanks to help from the H.264 encoder as well. This makes the conversion very easy and can handle a large batch at a time so that I can just let it run through the night.

Very happy with this move to Apple TV and looking forward to listening to my iTunes library and easily watching my downloaded video now. All TV should be like this.

Ah, I just wiki'd it. From Wiki:Fifth Gear first aired in 2002 as a replacement to the original incarnation of the BBC show Top Gear...

You should also check out Top Gear. They do things like... Build their own version of a Space Shuttle (using obnoxius looking smart car), launch it on a replica SRBs and fuel tank, all remote controlled of course. :)
