I'm for a cause?

I just got spammed (1 of 118) this morning by a student using one of our own systems in one of the labs on campus. They are promoting this site called http://www.imforacause.com/. They claim that for every person that signs up for an MSN IM account Microsoft will donate money. There's even a contest as part of the deal to win something.

This just screams of a scam, chain email, spam or some other type of fraudulent email. However, there is nothing on Snopes or anywhere else similar. It's actually reported by several college newspapers claiming that all of this real and for sometime now.

WTF is going on here? Anyone else run into this? Is this really legitimate and more clever marketing by Microsoft to get everyone on MSN?

Apparently it's a new push on the college front, but the program has been around for a little while now... http://im.live.com/Messenger/IM/Home/

Yep, it's really weird. While there are a few icons on there from Microsoft, I don't see a huge Microsoft endorsement either. That makes it look shady too. Although I do see the copyright at the bottom there.

Odd indeed. I've not heard of it. Though my school is not on their prefab list.

UW-Madison is on the list, so I poked around. My gut instinct is that it is legitimate. I have to admit the "Microsoft is giving money away" part makes it seem like a total scam. However, there are video interviews, etc. that give it a real feel.

I would imagine that it will disappear soon if it is a scam. It is convincing enough so that MS would take action.
