Meme: 8 Things

List 8 random things about yourself and then tag 8 others. I've been tagged by a few and too many that I know who did not tag anyone out of kindness, so here goes...

1. I used to splice fiber optic cable connections for a computer network.

2. I used to work for American Eagle at RDU airport as a ramp rat (bags, directing aircraft, power, etc.).

3. I was a fraction of a second away from being in a fatal car accident (car behind me was not as lucky).

4. I used to play with HO scale model railroads as a kid.

5. I played the french horn and saxophone in middle school and high school; and played the mellophone (similar to french horn) in high school in a competition marching band.

6. Before college I wanted to be an Air Traffic Controller and a Meteorologist.

7. I HATE coconut, chili powder/spice, cilantro, licorice, avocados and asparagus.

8. I've considered tossing my career, moving to Denver or Salt Lake City and becoming a snowboard instructor.

I tag anyone else who has not done this yet (you know who you are).

I have done it already (of course), but the #7 itself makes me my man: I HATE LICORICE TOO! :)

"...makes me my man..."? I missed something, or something did not translate right. :)

I like most of #7, but I can avoid those if I ever get to cook for you :)

It's unnerving to read #3, but very, very, very glad of course that fate smiled on you, if not on the car behind you.

And I look forward to learning everything about snowboarding from you that I can!

Yeah, #3, that was a "life flashes before your eyes" moment.

To make a long story short, back in 1998 while driving on US1 heading into Raleigh, a drunk driver crossed the median (no barriers back then). It missed me by a few feet, but the car behind me struck the truck (pick-up) head on. The two people in the front seat were killed (and wearing their seat belt). The two kids in the back seat were thrown up against the firewall and barely survived (obviously not wearing their seatbelt).

you've actually thought of moving to Salt Lake? hmmmmmmm well just make sure you live in park city
Jan. 25th, 2008 02:38 pm (UTC)
Hey, I know it's not your favorite place (although I don't think it gets as chilly as your current location, right?), but the snow, mountains and parks there are pretty amazing for someone who likes to snowboard and mountain bike. Since you do both, you can appreciate them (well, I think you ski instead of snowboard, can't remember now).

I would have other issues with living in SLC and not sure I would want to live there still. The religious culture there is not desirable, but could possibly be overcome I guess. At this point you have no desire to ever live there again?

I'm so glad I don't have this particular series of hates.

Yes, I'm a freak. I'm a meat and potatoes guy. :p

Well, yeah. All together that sounds incredibly vile.

I like coconut in desserts but not in savories; I don't care for cilantro or avocados at all; I'll have the occasional anise-flavored item (fennel or sambouca) but not the candy. But I can manage to cook without using any of those ingredients....

There is something about cilantro that makes it taste like chlorine to me. Ick. As for coconut, there is something about the texture that I just don't like.

Sadly... I love...coconut, chili powder, cilantro, avocados and asparagus. I am with you on licorice.

You just need to know someone who cooks and cooks great to give you those things in ways that it will make your heart melt. :-)

My joey is just that way. BUT... other than chili powder and asparagus... I think he agrees with you.

From what I've seen it appears you have culinary skills unlike me. With your vegetarian menu (it's not vegan, right?) I would guess spices are very common with your dishes.

If you know someone that could cook fine food and melt my heart, I'm all ears. :)

I'm glad to hear Joey is in some agreement with my food preferences. He sounds like such a find gentleman.

I'm okay with coconut, chili powder is okay in moderation, I tolerate cilantro because Mark thinks it's one of nature's perfect foods and tries to find ways to use it, black licorice is NASTY, I love avocados and asparagus if it's cooked right...not canned. That is SO slimy. Gah.

I also like brussels sprouts.
Jan. 25th, 2008 02:46 pm (UTC)
I can do brussel sprouts, but not my favorite. We all seem to be in agreement on the licorice. As I said before, there is something about cilantro that makes it taste like chlorine on my tongue.

I bet working the runways at the airport was kinda fun. At least you were outdoors.

And licorice is vile stuff. I can't imagine why people enjoy them.
Jan. 25th, 2008 02:51 pm (UTC)
I was in the best shape of my life when I worked at the airport. Moving bags, hooking up ground power units, constant walking and running, I could not eat enough to keep up with my physical activity. I weight like 140 back then. I had quite the farmers tan too. The worst part of that job was cold, rainy days. When there was a little downtime we would huddle around the exhaust fans of the generators to keep warm while waiting for the next plane to come/go. Beyond that it could get worse if it snowed and we went into de-icing mode. Now, you're wet, cold and you smell like glycol. Yeah, that was the worst by far in that job, but not often. Otherwise, it was nice to be outdoors on a daily basis.

I think everyone is on board with the "licorice sucks" platform. :)

Wow! I played French Horn in junior high. I didn't know you did too. I was horrible.

Joe, sadly, I don't think we're going to make it up this week. My mom is taking off tomorrow and Wednesday, then we head out Thursday. Family stuff has sucked up all my time. Sorry!
