Barista bonding?

So, what's with this whole Starbucks closing for 3.5 hours so they can retrain their barista's this evening?

Here in Seattle, it's an opportunity for other coffee shops to show off how much better non-Starbucks coffee is. And I need to go get my free latte: thanks for reminding me. :)

My good friend and barista guru David's take on it below.

No, you misunderstood. It's barista bondage; they're explaining and demonstrating the use of ropes, restraints, and cuffs.

Goddammit! It wasn't retraining. It was so that we could all be on the same page. We had some equipment upgrades and we're upping our standards. Apparently McDonald's and Dunkin' Donuts are gunning for us. We need to be better than them.

I'm also sick of everyone and their dog asking me about us closing our stores. Well, duh. Cannibalization much?

OMG! I can't believe it took you this long to go on the attack! I was starting to wonder if you had dropped dead or something. :D

Not retraining, eh? Do not watch the evening news. ;)

Fucking WHORES! It's okay. I am starting to hate my job, anyway. Even though I known that my job is more important than law enforcement.

It seems kinda silly to me but hey... if it gets people talkin about Starbucks I guess it's good PR for them.

Oh, I was fine. I don't drink coffee. :) It was more of stirring the pot for my fellow coffee drinkers.

Surprisingly ABC Evening news covered it last night. Guess that takes care of getting PR.

I don't drink coffee.

Whut?

A person can live... without coffee?

No. I don't think so.

But in any case: friends don't let friends drink Starbucks.

Yes, sweetie. If you can live without TV, I can live without coffee. :p

Are you the kind that brews your own where you grind the beans and use a coffee press?

...the kind... <--- What the rest of the world calls those of us who understand a truly wonderful cup of coffee.

No press for me, though. It is a little known, but scientifically supported fact that coffee prepared without a filter (i.e., pressing) contributes to elevated serum cholesterol levels, while filtered coffee either doesn't, or doesn't significantly.

If you can live without TV, I can live without coffee.

Fair enough. But have you thought about replacing your TV with a coffee machine? We could start you off slowly, and gradually work you up to three or four pots a day.

I don't know about cholesterol but some studies show it raises your blood pressure. So I limit my press intake...of STARBUCKS!

Someone has clearly already had a pot or two of coffee today. :)

Do you actually like working there? Or is this just a job while you're in school?

Oh, my Dad and brother are not going to be happy about that news. They do like their pressed coffee.

No caffeine for me--my stomach does not like it. I can't even drink significant amounts of soft drinks that contain a lot of caffeine without getting an upset stomach.

As for you, buddy, we'll start you off with a little The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, maybe some Battlestar Galactica here and there. Who knows? You might even like American Idol! :D
