The $200 light bulb

As mentioned in an earlier post, I've been having issues with my right headlight. My car has the xenon based headlamps. While they do a spectacular job at lighting up the road, they can be troublesome. I swapped the bulbs between the left and right to eliminate what might be the problem. Yesterday the flickering headlight problem moved to the left side--problem solved.

Here was the culprit in all of its glory...

Yeah. $200 for that little bugger. At least it works now and no more flickering or failures. Glad it was not the electronic module/transformer (ignites and raises the 12V to a very high voltage to maintain the arc for the bulb to operate). That would have been more labor and likely cost more.

I can add BMWs to my list of cars never to buy, now that I've learned my lesson with my Volkswagen. Wow!

Well, in BMW's defense, I could have not opted for the Xenon headlamps and stayed with the standard halogen.

When the Xenons do work, it's amazing. It definitely throws out some some serious light many times brighter than halogen ever could. Some people complain that these HID types blind them on the road, but not on BMW's. They use a auto leveling system that adjusts to the tilt of the car to keep the headlights down when accelerating, up when braking and keeping them from blinding oncoming drivers. I think Acura has the worst fixed system as I'm always annoyed by their HID lights.

It's a pricey option, but one I'd be willing to spend money on again. Looking forward to the day when LED's will replace headlamps too.

HAHA...my friends and family HATE riding in front of me. Acura does need to fix their lighting system, I do agree. Though I am pretty happy with the light they give out.

Re: something to look forward to
Xenon bulbs are supposed to last even longer than halogen bulbs. Hopefully you won't have to worry about it for a very long time and they should outlast the life of the car. Clearly, this one was a dud (and out of warranty with 80K miles and 5 years now).

I do love my Xenon headlights as well. Luckily, I haven't have a failure in the 115k and 8 years. Knocking on wood.

Aren't pictures where you measure parts with a ruler against the LiveJournal TOS? :-)
