Who wants a 8GB 3G iPhone for $199?

I was just watching some of the highlights via http://macrumors.com covering the conference that ended a little while ago. Awesome features were added, it's much faster and they are cheaper now. $199 for the 8GB and $299 for the 16GB. I'm still very apprehensive about AT&T, but this might be enough to push me over the edge and switch.

I'm guessing it will be a zoo at the stores, so I might just get it online. Suggestions?

It'll be interesting to see what the plan cost is. It had better not go up.

I hope it stays where it is too. Verizon's plans are still quite pricey.

I'd pay Verizon's price for Verizon EVDO on an iPhone. EVDO kicks ass - it's fast as hell and coverage is near universal. Not something I can say for AT&T on K's iPhone. And from what I hear, AT&T's 3G network is pretty pathetic.

I've done the tethering with my current phone and it does work pretty well. I'm sure I'll be waiting to see how well things live up to the hype. I've had this phone for 3 years and I can wait a few more months.

If iPhone was available from Verizon, it would be a slam dunk for me.

it's 30 buck data plan up where now I pay 20 bucks.

good thing you have a month to decide ;) I'm leaning towards yes.

Yep, it's true, the shiny part of this may fade a bit by then. Or..., maybe not. Either way, we have to wait. :(

I'm just happy they don't look all that different from the early model. Otherwise I'd obsess over it until I found a way to upgrade. I'm all about the flash.

We are supposed to get the software upgrade tiday, I think.

Heh, there's not that much to change about it cosmetically, is there? I mean it's mostly display. I suppose the back is a little different.

Wish I didn't have to wait until July 11th.

I thought the upgrade was available in July, too? *clutches pearls* OOOOOhhh, how I'd love that, though. Mmm.

I. Am. Shitty. I just bought mine on April 27th. I would have waited. And I paid $499 for the damn thing.

My biggest complaint about the phone is with AT&T. I get a lot of dropped calls and "Could not connect..." messages that drive me insane. I also have fingers like sausages and texting is a pain in the ass because I hit the wrong buttons all the time. I also have a pretty good sized case for protection. When you pay $500 for a phone it doesn't make sense not to protect it.

Other than that, I've been very happy. I thought that WebApps would be annoying and stupid, but so far, so good. I use them and they work. Email works great and with the new MobileMe thing I'm sure I'll be very happy.

On 3G, as I'm reading nrubenstein's entry below, I don't think that AT&T has the 3G network available where I live, yet. I don't notice a huge difference from Verizon's EVDO network and AT&T's. Honestly. I used to have the internet on my Q and this doesn't seem that much slower. Of course I don't actually DL much and when available I do use wi-fi. I've had phones with Wi-Fi in the past and the iPhone is faster on Wi-Fi. Plus? Where the hell are you that you don't have Wi-Fi coverage? Honestly.

Having said that, opt for the 16 GB model. You'll have more storage for stuff. :-)

Well, I knew someone who got an iPhone last week--I'm sure they're not too happy right now.

When out traveling it can be hard to find a wi-fi spot (or one that does not cost you an arm and a leg (or a gallon of gas)).

I've played with the keyboard some and it worked pretty well for me.

Apparently if you bought one after May 27th you get to upgrade for free.

So the few things I've saw on the web today. New plans to match all other smart phones instead of what they currently charge. Means 30 dollars for 3G Home user and 45 for business users for unlimited data. Also, only available in stores (Apple, and At&T) and must be activated in store (unlike the ease of activating the old version).
It is on my short list of things to get though, even if the price is going up slightly on the data plan.
Oh and reading material http://gizmodo.com/5014764/iphone-3g-pricing-and-activation-details-30-unlimited-data-activated-in-store-only

Thanks, that was some good information in there. Sounds like I'm going to wait a bit longer and let the details and craze wind down.

It sounds like a hell of a deal on paper. I say take the plunge as long as there is service in your area, Joe.

Yeah, we'll see. The more I think about it the more think I'll wait and see how the hype turns out. Maybe wait until August to get one.

Waiting for the hype to die down might be a great idea. Give them time to work out any bugs in the first roll out. You can jump on board after the first software update!

Jun. 10th, 2008 12:34 am (UTC)
you will have to activate it in the store (not sure why) so even if you buy it online, you will have to go to the att store or apple store to activate it. so very long lines
Jun. 10th, 2008 02:36 am (UTC)
Yep, I saw some tidbits of that. That will not be fun. Don't think it will be worth getting on day 1.
Jun. 10th, 2008 05:49 am (UTC)
well.... that's the iphone I DO want. I'd make it 16GB. :)
Jun. 13th, 2008 02:10 am (UTC)
Buy it!
I have the OLD one and LOVE it. AT&T is a bit of an issue in the rural areas, but in the cities has been fine!

They are wonderful, even looking forward to the new software updates!

How ya been?
