Ordered a new cell phone..., finally

Over the weekend I finally made up my mind on what to get. I ordered a Blackberry Curve 8330 from Verizon.

Yep, I still wanted to thew iPhone, but ATT was the show stopper. Their coverage is just terrible here and where I live too. I know others have decent service, but ATT coverage is not consistent across the triangle area. Even talked to some friends who are within the Durham city limits that admit they get 1 bar or no service at their home. Considering I use my phone as a pager when I'm on-call as well, that's a MAJOR show stopper right there (I refuse to carry a cell phone AND a pager).

ljtourist also suggested the Blackberry. I really have not been tracking some of the features with regards to Blackberry and gave it another look. I was impressed to see many of the new features and plug-in's (yep, including that Gmail plug-in) and a decent browser (anything would be better than what I have now. I even went into the Verizon store to lay may hands on it and tinker with it and I liked it.

I had to purchase online to get the work discount (they can't do that in the store) for the phone and service. The service options were quite confusing. I think I picked the right ones, but don't know for sure. I'll need to verify all of it when I get it setup. Cost was $144 and that's only for a 1 year contract--not bad.

Should be here in a day or two. There were some minor issues getting it to sync with Mac, but looking at the forums it looks like there are really good solutions already out there including syncing iTunes to it.

Yay! Welcome to the crackberry family! You'll have to share your PIN when you get it.

PIN? Clearly I have new things to learn.

Muahahaha!I mean, congratulations! You'll love it! Read the docs to learn all the keyboard shortcuts, and download Google Maps straight away.

$144 sounds... expensive. Though I went with a 2-yr. contract; maybe that's the difference. Another important part was picking the "Email and Web for Blackberry" data plan (not the more expensive BIS one) as an add-on. Between that and the lowest call plan, it's $70/mo before taxes. Of course, since you're getting this through work, it may be different for you, or you may want the "corporate" BIS plan.

Anyway, YAY!

Oh, no, this phone is for personal use. As a state employee I get a discount. I didn't think $144 was that bad for this device. If I went with a 2 year contract, it would have been about $100.

I got the "Blackberry® Solution 20MB of Data Usage". I assume the "Email and Web for Blackberry" was different data plan?

Oh, I misread that at first; you got the slightly more expensive Curve, not the Pearl, which puts that price right in line with what I'd expect. Sorry.

Huh; I don't even see a 20MB plan on their site. "Email and Web for Blackberry" is a $30/mo plan, but includes unlimited data usage. A brief review of my statements shows I've never gone over 13MB, so you should be fine.

As for PINs, all BB devices have one, and you can use this built-in app called "BlackBerry Messenger" to have IM-like chat with other BB users for no charge beyond data usage. I haven't really used it yet.

And YAY for strictly personal use. No need to be *too* in-touch.

When I switched to Verizon 3 years ago, they were pretty helpful with initial setup and tweaking the options just right. I hope I will have the same success this time. The 20MB option for me was $20/month.

The only thing this BB does not have is VCAST which I could not care less about right now. I have no desire to grab music or watch TV on a handheld device. My biggest fear is that Verizon has crippled something I want, but will cross that bridge when I come to it.

No problem. Remind me after a few weeks if you don't see anything. Knowing me, I'll be bitching about it much sooner. :p

you can sync iTunes to it? that's kinda neat!

Blackberry had PocketMac (I think that's right) on their web site for doing some synchronization and it's free. However, some people have reported problems with it and switched to The Missing Sync" that does more advanced synchronization.

Odd, Verizon gave me my Duke discount last week when I went to get my new phone at the store at Southpoint. I looked briefly at the crackberries, but decided against it, since soooo many folks at work are getting them these days. Plus, then work would want access to it for paging, email, etc, and that's NOT happening!

Could be there is a difference between state employees and Duke? My email that confirmed my status said it could only be done online or call directly (not in the store). Oh well, too late now since I put in the order.

I rarely get called about work stuff on my personal cell phone. I really loathe carrying two devices around when I'm on-call too. We have a way to switch who has on-call duties on the fly, so you don't have to remember who has it. Most of our pager duty messages are strictly automated.

I need to find out if Verizon applied a discount for the new every 2 thing. I have a feeling that was not applied.

What new phone did you get?

I looked between the Glyde, the Dare, and the Voyager. I ended out getting the latter of the 3, partially due to stereo external speakers as much as for the keyboard. It felt better than the one on the Glyde, and the Dare only has a virtual keyboard on the touch screen, and it just didn't flow right for me.

As state employees, y'all probably get a better deal than we do. Verizon and Duke seem to be constantly butting heads about one thing or another!

If it wasn't for the Blackberry, I likely would have gotten the Voyager. Glyde had way too many complaints on Phonescoop. Dare was just a weird name and looked too generation X or something like that. I did not even bother looking at it. I think you made a really good choice there.

There are few more state employees around than Dookies. :p

So far I've really enjoyed the phone, especially that I've been able to get my own sound clips over for ringtones. I enjoyed my V before this one, but that and the clunkiness were my biggest complaints. I spent several hours the other night (waiting for midnight and 1am to check a few servers) finding fun songs and snipping bits for people.

If you decide you hate it, call me and I'll send you my old Q for you to test out. :-C
