1992 BMW 525i

The loaner car is a 1992 BMW 525i after I dropped off my car for some needed preventative maintenance at Shadetree Garage in Raleigh. It's always interesting to see the loaner I get from them. This one is in pretty good shape for a 16 year old car and it has 250,000 miles--wow. Finish on the outside is pretty worn, but the car starts up great, has plenty of power and everything works. Only problem is the computer complaining about the oil level sensor and the license plate light being out.

After replacing all of the hoses, water pump and serpentine belt, my car will be good to go. Possibly ready today or maybe tomorrow. I've got wheels, so no problem. Nice to drive something different.

Hopefully a new coolant reservoir, too. Of all of those, that seems to be the thing that fails first.

Yep, I'm pretty sure that was on the list. Pretty much changing everything out in the cooling system but the radiator. Their experience has shown it typically makes it to 100,000 miles (I have 82,000 now).

My dad leased a new, white M5 in 1991. It was a hoot to drive but it was constantly in the shop for electrical problems. Eventually BMW had to buy the car back. It had unusual wheels: it was as if the wheels came in two pieces with an outer alloy ring & the actual mag inside. Installed, the outer ring gave the appearance that the M5 was shod with whitewall tires.
