Kitchen update, new countertops

They showed up right on time and go to work installing the new countertops. I'm really happy with the color I picked out and it blends with everything. They call it Black Forest but I think it doesn't reflect reality. Here is one close up view of the surface and the rest were added to existing Kitchen upgrade set on Flickr.

There were a few complications. First, the lack of levelness of the cabinets was noticed, but they worked around the issue. If you look from underneath you can see the gap, but you can't see it from a distance. Second, one of the walls bows out causing a slight gap at one end. There is nothing they can do here--it's the sloppiness of the builders of this house. So, I have a slight gap behind the backsplash of about 3/16" and can be easily filled in with caulk.

Finally, the plumbing is messed up. Everyone kept telling me that Lowe's would handle all of the plumbing. They had to saw off the existing drain system (the same one I ripped out and then spliced back in to repair the cabinet) because the depth of the sink was much greater and would not fit. So, they had no choice but to cut it out again. They said Lowe's would take care of that. After Apex was done with everything I called Lowe's to find out where they were only to realize there was no order whatsoever because they thought all I would need to do is just attach the faucet and be ready to go. When I explain the drain was ripped out she was surprised and had no idea that was needed. So, she's working that with her managers right now to resolve, but would not be able to get anyone out today.

In the meantime, I need install the drain baskets, faucet is installed and I just need to make sure I don't use the countertops for 24 hours. Overall, I'm pretty happy, but these complications have been a downer. What else is new? These things happen on such big projects.

Looks great Joe, bet you can't wait until EVERYTHING is finsihed. It'll all be worth it. What's going over the stove?

Yep, there is still work to do, but this is the MAJOR part of the project. I'll be much happier when this much is behind me.

Over the stove there is a small cabinet that bridges that gap, but I have it removed for now to cut holes in it when the microwave arrives (over-the-range microwave). That's next on the list.

Thanks! It's hard to get pictures of this stuff. I'll try my nice flash the next time. Those countertops look more brown than they really are due to a reflection of the cabinets above.

That looks really nice. You can kind of see the "Black Forest" in the corner where the flash is reflecting. Either way, it looks great! Good choice.
