Got Google Gears?

If you use Gmail, then you should get Google Gears and give it a spin. It's a collection of cool tools that integrate with Gmail and a variety of other web applications for multiple platforms.

What's the coolest part? Offline mail reading in Gmail! I installed the module last night on my laptop and in about 10 minutes it downloaded 6 months worth of the most recent Gmail to my local system for offline reading. Wish I had this when I was on vacation as it would have allowed me to catch up on personal email while on the plane and other places where I had no Internet.

This is still in its early stages and they still have some bugs to work out, but it's working OK for me right now. Most of the time I have a wifi connection, but with this installed all of that email is cached locally meaning it does not have to go to Gmail to fetch it, so it's much faster now too.

I thought the announcement was neat. But I can't see a good use (for me personally) for the offline Gmail. I've always got the phone with me.

I have my Berry with me all the time too, but when you really want to chew through some mail and clean up stuff, the Berry slows me down. I also can't easily view HTML email and click on the links so gracefully as you can on a real web browser. I'll only use this feature on my MacBook though.

I guess my point is I'm rarely anywhere that I have a computer *without* the internet access. Maybe in chorus Board meetings. But I should be paying attention to meetings ;) flights DEFINITELY make sense.

Being able to read LJ offline would be pretty slick.
