Rice-A-Roni is not the same thing as rice

Was trying another recipe this weekend with the crock pot. This time it was chicken with carrots and rice. The recipe called for "wild/long grain rice with seasoning packet". I picked up the Rice-A-Roni (you know, the San Francisco treat?) think it would do. 5 hours later I came hope the the wonerful smell of chicken and seasonings.

When I dug it to scoop out some grub for dinner, I noticed I did not see the rice/roni anywhere in the mix. There was this starchy goop in the bottom though. Then it hit me that Rice-A-Roni is NOT RICE! It's entirely pasta. So, what happens when you overcook pasta for hours and hours? Mush.

It was still very tasty and the chicken was perfect (practically fell apart with just a fork). I know next time to use real rice. I'm sure this will just be one of many mistakes I'll be making as I manage to cook more and more in the future.

Ah young grasshopper, some lessons can only be learned by experience. Rice-A-Roni still is an awesome side, even if it is on the edge of white trash cooking...

With God as my witness I did not know Rice-A-Roni was pasta...

I'm so ashamed.

Rice-A-Roni does sound a bit like macaroni, right?

And I prefer my past al dente, thanks. :)

Don't worry, you're not the only "ditz" on LJ (*raises hand and waves*). Who knew?!?!!? I knew it was the San Francisco treat.

I just got into this "discussion" at work. I am white trash, so growing up I believed that Rice a Roni was rice. After I found out I liked it just as much.

Oddly, Mark has an aversion to egg noodles. They were a staple at our trailer.

I have made this exact same mistake before and ended up with a slurry instead of rice for dinner. It's far from appealing.
