41

It's bad enough turning 40, but another thing when you turn 41--another step further beyond 40. It was a low key day with a nice long walk in the cold (36°F/2°C) with a stiff breeze.

I had dinner with mom, dad and healingdrysuits (brother) at Caffé Luna in downtown Raleigh (locals just call it Luna). None of my family has been there before and it's been a few years since I've been there. It's excellent Italian food and I have some tasty leftovers for later today. I hardly ever get into downtown Raleigh and every time I go there it seems like it's a little more grown up and the skyline is a little busier. I like it.

Went back home to parents house to have some chocolate layer cake. I got a new apron, some nice cutting boards and also an unexpected surprise of a nice 4-cup chopper/grinder that should get some use very soon as I cook more. Soon we were all tired and brother had some new issues to deal with and had to leave. I headed over to Dave's where we finally exchanged our Christmas presents and just hung out for awhile catching up on things.

I did not feel all that well later on and I knew what it was. That caesar salad for dinner came back to bite me as I feared so that kept me up until about 1am. Got to remember that salad is a MAJOR trigger for my IBS--must avoid it unless it's in very small quantities.

I'm looking forward to turning 30 in a couple months but people have warned me that its when I turn 31 that I'll freak out.

Yep, that's what happened when I reached 23 (2 whole years after 21). What about turning 30 are you looking forward to?

I don't know, I just find it exciting to be going into my 30s. I never did identify with people my own age in my late teens and 20s, all my friends have always been in the 30s, 40s etc. So, I'm not particularly attached to being in my 20s anymore, I'm glad to leave them :).

It's my hope that my 40s, as they begin next May, will
be the best decade of my life. That's what they promised.

I can see that. As long as I've known you, you've deal with a lot of crap from people. Things are looking pretty good for you now. You're due for some good karma. :)

Oh, yeah, who promised you that the 40's would be your best? Just curious.

It's just something I've heard uttered out of a few mouths and probably read in a handful of pop psychology and self-improvement articles. By 40, I guess we tend to have our act together and can enjoy all the benefits that come to us in a period of financial and emotional calm.

Sort of like striking a balance between with our maturity and strength/youth?

For me, I think I find myself letting go of my self-image and what other people think of me. Definitely more living in the moment. I feel more calm too.

Ahhhh. 41. Such a baby ;-).

I know what you mean about the salads. I REALLY miss good salad but can only tolerate it in small quantities. One thing I found that does help is eat your salad along with some white bread. It'll help fill you up and counter balance some of the raw veggies of the salad.

Oh, shut it! :p

I know what you mean about the salads..., eat your salad along with some white bread...

Yep, I should have had more bread, but was trying to keep the calories down. That probably explains how I can have a small amount of shredded lettuce on sandwiches. I so miss a good salad and it's perfect for losing weight.

Because of my far more moderated diet I've been able to add back things that triggered by IBS (whole wheat bread, apple skins (like eating a whole apple) and cereal) with no side effects. I guess lettuce will just remain one of those foods where there is no real workaround for my digestive system.

40s...... They start in May for me and I too expect them to be the best decade of my life. Many things started happening in the past few months and many more to follow, so I'll do my best.

It's still hard to believe you're close to 40. ;)

so many pre-40's, young whipper snappers....

hearing me udder the 1 after the first number was a hoot, only noticed the neatness after passing the 50 part

as for the others who say their 40's will be the best decade?, it's what ever you make of it. my 40's was ok, getting a bigger kick with my 50's
