Amazon.com sues North Carolina

So, according to WRAL-TV this evening, our state government (North Carolina) apparently demanded this history of purchases from Amazon.com for all NC residents..., for the past 7 years! Not just statistics, but they requested the names, addresses, purchased items and costs of each and every transaction. They said they needed this for audit purposes.

Here's the full story...

In short, Amazon.com said no. Tehy provided them with statistical information and overall totals, but no individual information for any of its customers. There's apparently an ongoing battle over this. I know why NC is doing this as we struggle with our own state budget and watch all of that sales tax go elsewhere, but this is totally not the way to go about it. I'm hoping the publicity on the local news will put a stop to this.

This would be a precedent that would literally result in nationwide auditing of every individual that lives in a state that has income tax. This would be a bad, bad thing.

If NC decided to tax me for ever thing I've ever bought from Amazon, I'd go broke over night.

But I thought republicans (NC lawmakers) didn't want government intruding in their lives?
