Day 4, tire failure and finally home

This morning and afternoon were spent with Grandma and Grandpa over lunch and we talked for hours. I really need to call them much more often than I have been. I ended up not getting out of Yulee until about 1630 this afternoon. Last week one of my tires was really low and have been checking it carefully ever since. It wa about 2 pounds low this afternoon and brought it back up to 35psi for the ride home.

Ride home was mostly uneventful until I got into SC when my left rear tire failed (the same one that was low last week). All I heard was this thumping sound and it got worse. I figured it was the tire and pulled over on the side of I-95. It was completely flat and the sidewall had failed. Limped to the next on-ramp to get an extra lane between me and traffic and changed to the spare (full-size). The bad tire was so damn hot that I could not even grab it. Even after I mounted the spare the tire was still too hot to touch and place in the trunk. Apparently it had been running really low for a long time. With the help of some paper towels, I was able to grab it long enough to get in the trunk and get on my way (after I had to pump up the tire too from 20psi).

I was just flustered on the way home worry about this. Now I have another thing to do and it will cost money. This car is all wheel drive, so it's not just a matter of slapping another tire on and the wheel diameters will be different. I'm considering other options.

Anyway, I'm home as of 2330 and glad I am. Need to fix some food, maybe catch up on my F1 race from Sunday and then off to bed. I'm off tomorrow (thank, God!) and then head off to Texas Friday morning.

It has the AWD system of a WWII Jeep (I'm not kidding). A little difference in tire diameter isn't going to hurt anything. You have a transfer case and two open differentials.

Really? I figured those old jeeps were 4WD (all differentials locked). I'm thinking of just getting one tire and maybe shaving it down a bit to the same tread depth. Not planning on buying 4 tires at this point. I really like these tires (and a nail is not the tires' fault).

Damn, traveler boy... :-) I hope you're able to get *some* rest.

Other than the tire scenario, the last few days have been very relaxing. I could have spent several more days down with the family in Yulee. They just have such a beautiful spot on the marsh with a constant breeze coming in under a huge caonpy of trees.
