My cadets in the military and Iraq

As many of you know, I've been working with Civil Air Patrol for many years of service as a cadet and senior member. Recently there was a thread on our North Carolina mailing list asking members to share information about cadets that were enlisting in the military and what their plans and possible locations.

I just read through that thread and recognized most of the names. These are cadets I have witnessed at their squadron or at an encampment. They started out as a timid person, but eager to learn and eventually lead. Over the years many of them became outstanding cadet officers in CAP and a few of them chose a life in the military. It's very scary to think of these young people I've seen grow up in CAP and now some of them are headed to Iraq and other unpleasant places.

I have every bit of confidence they will do an outstanding job as they have in CAP. Still..., it's very surreal to see where they are headed now. I hope to stay in touch with many of them and hope for their safe return.

Yeah, I feel the same way too. Especially since I've been writing letters of recommendation for some of them to get in the academies. I feel a twinge of guilt just thinking about the "what if's". But if serving in the military is what they really want, then we will support them no matter what.
